Rubbing alcohol or leather/vinyl cleaner

Cotton swab or cotton pad

Plastic wrap (optional, for adding texture to the repair)

Step 1

Cleaning the Area

  • Clean the area around the claw marks on your leather recliner with rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab

  • Make sure to test it on a hidden area first. If alcohol is harsh for your material, you may use warm, soapy water or your usual leather or vinyl cleaner

Step 2

Mixing the Repair Compound

  • If your repair requires a custom color, refer to the Color Mixing Guide in the kit to match the color and prepare the mixture using the empty mixing jar provided

Step 3

Applying the Repair Compound

  • Apply the repair compound to the clawed area on your leather recliner
  • Start by applying it under and along the edges and work from the outside toward the center
  • Use the spatula for larger applications and the brush for surface applications and detail touch-ups

Step 4

Drying and Additional Layers

  • Allow several hours for the repair compound to dry until it is no longer sticky to the touch on your leather recliner
  • Once dry, apply additional layers until the repaired area is level with the rest of the area

Step 5

Buffing Out the Edges

  • After the repair compound has dried, use a cotton pad or cotton swab and rubbing alcohol to buff out the edges on your leather recliner

Step 6

Finishing Up

  • Use a leather conditioner to nourish the leather and restore its natural shine.

Step 7

Maintenance

  • Wipe your recliner down with a damp cloth or leather cleaner every few weeks to remove dust and dirt.
  • Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight for long periods of time.
  • Use claw deterrents, such as double-sided tape or citrus sprays, to discourage your cat from clawing the recliner again.

Works well, is pretty easy to use, easy cleanup

I used this kit to repair little holes our cat made on our sofa arms. These were a bunch of little pinhole-type punctures, not full-on shredding or big tears, so I can only speak to how it works for this particular type of damage.

Overall I was really happy. Our sofa is an odd shade of dark teal pleather, and I was worried I wasn't going to be able to get a good match. But that part turned out to be pretty easy with a little bit of trial and error. Fortunately, you can use a cotton swab with a bit of alcohol to help blend it in with the surrounding area, or to remove it entirely and start over if you're not happy with how it looks. Cleanup is really easy. Just rinse your brush and mixing jar with a little alcohol.

When I was a kid in the 80s, there was a mail-order vinyl repair kit advertised on TV. There was a paper you applied on top that would simulate the leather grain, and then you'd use an iron on it. I have no idea if those kits really worked, but of course in the commercial it looked magical. This is not that product. This is a set of paints that you custom mix to match your shade, and it air dries to a vinyl-like consistency. Getting a smooth-looking repair depends mostly on your level of skill/patience in getting it right. If you need to fix a large (greater than 1/4") tear or hole, there's some fabric included that you can use as a sort of base layer for the patch, but I didn't need that. There's nothing to help create a leather grain texture in your fix, so I don't know how convincing your repair would be if you were patching a large rip or hole. But the seller includes an e-mail address if you need advice or help using the kit, so I'm sure they'd be able to offer some suggestions for that if you need it.

As for my repair, it looks pretty good. It's not a miracle fix. If you're actively looking for the repairs you can see them, but it's good enough that when guests come over they probably won't notice it. I'm still going to put covers on the sofa arms to protect them from additional damage, because it's not going to look great if I have to keep redoing it.
