How to repair tears on cotton couch upholstery: step by step

   Preparing the Area

   • Remove only loose threads or unstable fibers around the tears; do not pull on the surrounding fabric or enlarge the opening.
   • Clean the damaged area and nearby fabric with a mild, material-compatible solution and a soft cloth, then let it dry completely.
   • If the surface beneath the tears is sunken or missing padding, add a small, even amount of cotton wadding to restore a level base.

   Using the Backing Fabric

   • For an opening larger than about 1/4 inch (0.6 cm), cut a piece of backing fabric slightly larger than the damage and round its corners.
   • Use the kit spatula to slide the backing beneath the tears, keeping it flat and centered without stretching the surrounding fabric.
   • Do not add backing to shallow surface damage that does not need additional support.

   Mixing the Repair Fibers

   • Use the included Color Mixing Guide when a custom fiber blend is needed, and prepare the blend in the empty mixing jar.
   • Add the selected fibers and metal mixing ball, close the jar and shake until the colors are distributed evenly.
   • Compare a small sample with the dry cotton couch upholstery in its normal lighting before applying adhesive, and adjust the blend if necessary.

   Applying the Fabric Glue

   • Apply a controlled amount of fabric glue inside the tears, beginning at the edges and working inward.
   • Spread the adhesive into a thin, even layer without coating the undamaged fabric or leaving a raised pool of glue.

   Adding the Fibers

   • Remove the metal ball, stretch the mesh over the mixing jar and secure it firmly with the rubber band.
   • Hold the jar over the adhesive and tap it gently so the matched fibers fall evenly across the full glue layer.
   • Add only enough fibers to cover the adhesive; avoid creating a thick mound above the surrounding surface.

   Finishing Touches

   • Use the spatula to press the fibers gently into the adhesive and level the repair with the surrounding material.
   • If the cotton couch upholstery has a visible weave, line or pile direction, shape the fibers carefully to follow that pattern.
   • Leave the repair undisturbed for at least 24 hours. After the glue is completely dry, blow away or softly brush off only the loose excess fibers.
